Hunger Games watched again....

So I watched Hunger Games again. First time through I was okay with the flick. I had read half the book and knew the general story line, so it was what is was. Now knowing that book 2 is soon to be released as movie 2, I'm way more intrigued. I have NO idea what is to come for Katniss or Peta, and I'm damned curious. However, the story reminds me of my favorite Stephen King novella "The Long Walk." I read that piece when I was a mere 20 years old and it has never left my thoughts, nor has my stomach churning changed. King's story is somewhat similar in the fact that the world watches as the youth fights for life. King's story far surpasses this first Hunger Games book, but I still look forward to how Hunger Games progresses.
Once upon a time, King's "The Long Walk" was optioned for a movie with Frank Darabont attached. But I've heard no more about that wonderful fantasy. Perhaps too good to be true? Maybe for me. What I love most about both these stories is the social commentary on our obsessive nature of reality TV. I'm a victim to such, so I call no one out on their secret love. My thought, my question is, how far will we go in our actual reality TV watching?
Would you watch a Katniss character try and kill others her age or a 12 yr. old boy walk so long and watch his friends drop dead beside him? I say, it's all a matter of time. We are but animals disguised in designer clothes and too expensive make up.

Something 'Golden' lurks in North Dakota

I'm sure you guys have been waiting for my Golden Globe thoughts. Well, I haven't got many cause I didn't watch it. I was busy. But I'm happy The Descendants won. And George Clooney. And of course Madonna winning song. That pleased the hell out of me. Michelle Williams wins for her turn as Marilyn...deserved. Scorsese winning for Director of Hugo....Uggghhhh. And as far as other movie categories, I haven't seen the movie so I won't hate or love.
TV wins. Homeland!!!!!! And Claire Danes. How crazy for Claire to pick up another Golden Globe 15 years after her turn as Angela Chase. Girl can act. Very happy she won. Also deserved.

That's about that. I just feel this award season is lack luster at the moment. eh.

So I will leave you with a chuckle.
check out the tourism advertisement below. Please note the 'Legendary' below North Dakota. Oh, it makes me chuckle.

Are you there Vodka? Wednesday night TV review

Wednesday night TV is shaping up to be.....good TV, mostly.
We've got our staples, Modern Family, Revenge, Suburgatory. Adding to my Wednesday line up is One Tree Hill and Are you there, Chelsea?
Of course, One Tree Hill was all I needed it to be and I'm very anxious for the last 12 episodes. Again, someone dies, and I don't know who!!??
Now, the brand new, Are you there, Chelsea? is a little more complex for me to simply review. Based on Chelsea Handler's memoir Are you there Vodka? It's me, Chelsea, with Laura Prepon (That 70's show) taking the lead. Laura Prepon has always been ALMOST funny to me. She's always on the brink, but just lacks that extra ineffable thing that makes me laugh aloud. She's totally capable of her job, but as a comedic force spewing lines from the unstoppable mouth of Chelsea Handler??? Eh. Chelsea Handler is brash, uncouth, whorish, and delightful in her acceptance of all these personality traits. But, Laura Prepon acting like Chelsea is like watching a pretty girl act like Chelsea Handler. Its odd. Its unsettling.  Especially with Chelsea Handler acting in the show as the uptight sister. Weird.
The show may be better if it didn't have a laugh track.
I Love that there is a show with a strong female character that can "drink like two men" and enjoys sex freely. All good ingredients. But add that laugh track and suddenly I feel a forced lightness to every drink and sex joke. Are you there, Chelsea? is like staring at all the ingredients to cake, and as a viewer you just keep waiting for them to mix it and bake it. Cause till then, it's inedible.

Just so you know.....

I'm going through some terrible withdrawals. Last night I was shaking, itching, feigning for some Dexter Homeland combo. But no, I have another 6, 7 months before my Sunday nights are filled with frightening happiness.
Until then, Showtime is giving us Season 2 of Shameless and a new series called House of Lies.
I never finished season 1 of Shameless. I thought it was a good show, but for some reason it got lost in my shuffle of shows after 3 episodes. Season 1 is now available to stream via Netflix, so maybe....
As for House of Lies, I haven't watched it....yet. I'm sure I will drag my feet just like I did with Homeland, and eventually watch it. But, deep down, I know I won't like it as much as Homeland. Not that House of Lies is a "replacement" cause the two shows aren't even in the same genre, but damnit, in my Sunday night lineup it is a replacement because I'm stuck with Lies and No Homeland.

Now that I've had my temper tantrum, I will say that Kristen Bell will be the reason I tune into Lies. She is comedic happiness for me.
So, stay tuned, someday I will review House of Lies.
Until then.....watch CAGED on MTV tonight 9/8c.

Best music videos 2011 : How Mindy sees it.

I'm a child of music videos. I grew up and came of age all while watching music videos. In high school, when I couldn't sleep I would put on CMT and watch country music videos because there was always a story being shown and it always lulled me to sleep. I'm not a big lover of country music, but music videos still reign supreme.
So, as I countdown the best music videos, keep in mind, it's not always about the song!

10. Adele "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep"
She gave us two amazing songs and two amazing videos.

9. Eminem - "Spacebound" Great, beautiful storytelling.

8. Coldplay "Paradise"
7. Kanye West "Monster" This is the song that finally turned me on to Kanye. Might be my most obsessive song of the year. And when I try to sing Nicki's part, I just get happy. "I'm a motherfuckin' Monster!"

6. Kesha "Blow" This video 'blew' my mind. Unicorns and Dawson Leery? Yes, please!

5. Robyn "Call Your Girlfriend"  This video is absolutely incredible. It's one long take.

4. The Lonely Island "Jack Sparrow"  Two words: Michael Bolton
3. Rihanna "We found a love"  I just love this drug induced love affair gone bad music video. It's seductive and bad for me. :)
2. Rachael Yamagata "Even If I don't"  Rachael's best video thus far. Cheeky, sad, happy. Everything the song is.
1. Beastie Boys "Make Some Noise"  !!!!!!So many Cameos!!!! and the Delorean! Sold. Also, Fight for your Right video was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. I thought it was hands down the coolest thing ever.

Best/Worst Movies 2011: The Mindy Edition

As it has been read throughout this blog, I love movies. I watch alot of movies. I write screenplays. I daydream that my life is a movie. So, it should be no surprise that I have tons to say about the 2011 movie year.
To start with, my tiny anger/pet peeve: the movies that I don't have access to. You know what I'm talking about. Those small movies that are released on Decemeber 29 but to only two theaters in America. Of course those theaters aren't in Shreveport, so I'm left alone, crying, b/c some Entertainment Weekly writer gets to see the films and write their reviews and I'm left stranded in the Port wondering if the movies will ever make it here.
That's my sad story.
So, for 2011 here are the movies I feel that I've missed.

1. The Iron Lady
2. Martha Marcy May Marlene (which actually showed in Shreveport, but while I was out of town!!!!)
3. Pariah
4. We need to Talk about Kevin
5. Shame
6. The Artist
7. Carnage
8. A Dangerous Method

Only 8 movies, so, not too bad.
Obviously, those movies will be excluded from my list.
And I'm only doing top 5 and worst 5. This was a hard task for me. It was a good year in movies.

Best Movies
1. Drive
2. The Descendants
3. Young Adult
4. Midnight in Paris
5. Bridesmaids

My top movies all have 1 thing in common: re-watchablity!

Worst Movies
1. Shark Night 3D
2. Hangover II
3. In Time
4. Immortals
5. How Do You Know (technically, I think this film came out in 2010, but I saw it in 2011 so in my mind it counts. If you ask me about this movie, you will literally see rage leak from my ears.)

Mindy's Most Conflicted (these are movies that are suppose to be great, but left me blah.)
1. Hugo
2. Tree of Life
3. Rango
4. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (David Fincher fans don't hate on me, I still love me some Fincher, I just thought this movie was fine. Not fantastic. Rooney Mara, yes. The film, just okay.)
5. Super 8

Extra note to my conflicted list:
*Moneyball - I liked this movie. I did. I thought Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, AND Phillip Seymour Hoffman did great acting jobs. It was a good film. Great? Mind blowing cinema? A film that changes the landscape of films? No.

There you have it. Mindy's thoughts on the good and bad movies of 2011.
What are your thoughts?
got any?
let me hear them!!!

2011 TV Mindy's Best/Worst/Fun

The end of 2011 is near and reliving the best and worst moments makes me squeal like a 5 year old gay boy listening to Babs.
Here's my take on stuff. Please keep in your head that "my best/worst" isn't based on anything but my feelings. That's it. There's no science, just my little ole opinion.

Best New TV Shows
1. Homeland.
2. Revenge
3. American Horror Story
4. Suburgatory
5. Up all Night
6. 2 Broke Girls (it grew on me)

Worst New TV
1. H8R
2. Playboy Club
3. Charlie's Angels
4. Pan Am
5. Terra Nova

Best TV All around
1. Community (Please Come Back!!!!!!!!!)
2. Homeland
3. Dexter
4. Parks & Recreation
5. Revenge
6. The League
7. True Blood
8. It's Always Sunny
9. Cougar Town

Best Guilty Pleasures
1. Gossip Girl
2. Bad Girls Club
3. Ringer
4. Project Accessory
5. Pretty Little Liars
6. Vampire Diaries
7. Platinum Hit
8. America's Next Top Model: All Stars
9. One Tree Hill
10. Jersey Shore

As we can all see, I enjoy 'Guilty Pleasures' above all. That's because I like smiling and laughing and not taking it all too seriously. TV is meant to entertain. All my favorites, be it, guilty or best, entertain. And to each their own. Right? I mean, I can't explain how or why Jersey Shore entertains me. Wait, I can. They make me laugh! Their dumb, drunken antics make my jaw hang open just before it begins to vibrate with laughter. And thus, joy spreads through my body. Best medicine ever.
I'm sure I could add lots of shows to my lists, but I really only have so much TV viewing time in a week. One day, I'll watch Game of Thrones and begin to understand why everyone is loving it.
I attempted The Walking Dead, but became bored after 4 episodes. It happens. Not all TV is meant for everyone. Heavy dramas can be too exhausting for me. I'm hoping that the forthcoming seasons of Homeland don't turn into a 24. Meaning, I get bored and stop watching.
The 2011 Fall TV line up was the best in years. And I would like to thank networks, writers, creators for bringing TV back to awesome. Even though Michael Scott left me, I still feel safe in NBC's Thursday night line-up.
MidSeason shows are looking very promising too and I know I'll have plenty to say on those soon.
As an added bonus, my husband has a few categories.

Rob's Favorite New Reboot Show
1. Thundercats

Rob's Most Disappointing Reboot Show
1. Transformers Prime

Rob's Favorite TV of the Year
1. Community
2. It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia
3. The League
4. Thundercats
5. Star Wars: The Clone Wars
6. Big Bang Theory
7. The Office
8. Up all Night
9. Cougar Town
10.How I Met Your Mother

How bout your thoughts. I'd love to read them. Bring it on.
Also, check back soon to hear my scathing Best/Worst Movies of the Year!!!! I'm sure it will spark debate.

1 day, 2 movies = 2 thumbs up

I miss double headers. Committing the whole day to a movie theater,  eating theater food (nachos!) and drinking too much soda while I flit from movie to movie; those were the days.

However, Rob and I recently saw 2 movies in the same day! It wasn't really a double header cause we actually left the theater in between movies (he had some work and we have animals that need to potty). But damn, it was still fun especially cause we saw two good movies.

The first was Mission Impossible 4 on the IMAX screen. This is such a "theater" movie. This movie should only exist in theaters. Bringing it down to your "home theater" is just wrong and indirectly abusive to the filmmakers. You just won't be experiencing the movie as it was intended! Which is in a Huge theater with a 1,000 story IMAX screen (I'm exaggerating).
MI: 4 was such a fun roller coaster movie of action, wit, and Tom Cruise showing how amazingly well his body works at the age of 49! Say what you will about Tom, but when you enter the movie, let it go and just enjoy what that man has to offer: charisma, athletic prowess, and an ass made from the Greek Gods. He's perfect action, leading man material. All in all, the movie was down right fun. As my husband would say, "you don't order pizza and expect a steak." It is what it is.

The second movie of the day was Young Adult. Written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, which is the team that brought you Juno. Also, I just know that Diablo and I would make great friends. We would gossip about 90210 and the 80's and 90's while we drank too much and then we'd write a script about a murderous socialite named Bambie. *sigh*
Young Adult is a movie that will be highly overlooked because its too much like real life that it's uncomfortable. Everything about it was a direct juxtapose to my MI:4 experience, right down to theater size. Charlize Theron stars in what I say is her career best performance (yes, better than Monster) as the completely unlikeable character Mavis Gary. Diablo Cody has written such a beautifully complex female character that my insides seer with pure envy and jealously. And like real life, the movie ends with no real convenient wrap up. There is no forced character moment of self revelations that makes the audience comfortable with the choices the character has made during the previous 90 minutes. It just is. The movie is a wonderful voyeuristic viewing into a life of a mid western 30 something woman who is unhappy with her life and with herself.
I don't want to give you a plot point analysis of this movie, I just want you all to see it.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly..........Mindy's movie info.

The Good?
The very long awaited trailer for Cabin in the Woods. I've anxiously been awaiting this movie and I have no idea what has taken so long for release, but by God, I'm happy it's near. (release date is April 2012).
Written by the Genius minds of Joss Wheadon (Buffy!!!) and Drew Goddard (Buffy, Angel, Lost) this movie is sure to be unabashedly Awesome.
Watch the trailer. Also, watch the WHOLE trailer. This is NOT your typical dumb horror movie.

The Bad?
It's December. Oscar movies are making the rounds. Great movies are just waiting to be seen, such as: My Week with Marilyn, Young Adult, A Dangerous Method, The Artist, The Descendants, We Need to Talk about Kevin, Shame.
What's playing at my local cineplex? None of the above. I've had a little free time, but have I gone to the theater? NO. Why? Cause I don't want to see family friendly happy holidays penguins vampires sitting on New Year's Eve part 2. Disappointment abounds.

The Ugly?
Some nitwit has decided because of Occupy Wall Street that it's a great idea to remake American Psycho and set it in present day. Yes, you read that sentence correctly. Oh! And for the microbudget of $2 million. I can already say it will suck. Stop fucking with Classics! I don't see painter's re-making the Mona Lisa. Studio's should stop. Become original. Hire new people. Like me :)

2 reasons Shreveport kinda Rocks......

Rob and I have been living in Shreveport for 3 years now. 3 years. And in that 3 year time period we haven't done much outside of working and hitting the plethora of bars. Now in our 30s (Rob's the big 30 tomorrow!!) we are looking for more substantial entertainment. Not that we're real adults or anything, just itching for something new.
Our first venture away from the bars took us to the Louisiana State Fair. I LOVE fairs/carnivals. I have deep happiness associated with them since my childhood. But, this was my first Louisiana Fair. And we went on a Saturday night. I'm not a crowd person. Down right hate them. But I ventured there anyway.
We didn't ride any rides.
We ate.
And we ate. (And drank a couple of beers)
Damn fair food is AMAZING.
Best discovery of the night was the Cheddar Nuggets or as the Northern's say "cheese balls." Cheese balls were/are Rob's favorite food. I am quite partial to them also! You can't find cheese balls in the south. Cheese sticks? Yes. Cheese Balls? No. And really, they taste completely different!
Here is the wonderful place that sold us 2 orders of Cheddar Nuggets.

We also had a blast taking pictures. Here's C3P0 holding the cheddar nugget.

The following Saturday night, Rob surprised me with tickets to the Symphony. Sounds super fancy, right? Yep. But this wasn't just any Symphony, nope, it was Cirque De La Symphonie!
Not as extravagant as a real Cirque du Soleil, but it was damn enjoyable. And we had such a lovely time. Rob managed to sneak a picture during a performance. Shhh, don't tell anyone!! We had great seats and I didn't nod off once! It really was a wonderful night.
I like my husband ;)

So, you local Shreveportions, Shreveportinites, Shreveporters, Shreveportonians.....venture out. Try something new. Like hit the fair and ONLY focus on food. Or go to the Symphony. It's kinda awesome!

Oscar debacle in few words....

If you are unaware of what's been happening with the fate of the Oscar's host & producer, no worries, I'm here to sum it all up for you:

Brett Ratner (check his credentials here.) was set to Producer the next Oscars.
Eddie Murphy was set to host.
Brett Ratner said in a videoed interview that rehearsing is for f**gots.
The world got offended (please keep in mind that Brett Ratner is a douche. Hollywood knows it. The world should too).
Brett Ratner got "let go" and Eddie Murphy quit in some strange alliance to Ratner.

Now, Brian Grazer (credentials here.)is producing and......
drum roll........
Billy Crystal is hosting.
I do find it funny that with a little controversy surrounding the Oscars, the Oscars' Gods go back to what they know; Billy Crystal.
I'm not complaining, I love Billy as a host. He has never done wrong in my eyes. But, come on, it's a little funny.

That's the week in Oscar news :)

Darren Aronofsky

Mr. Aronofsky is a hero/inspiration to me. He's a director I look up to and study. His films creep inside me and linger a little too long for comfort. THAT takes talent. I always remember the first time I see one of his movies. They are visceral pieces of moving art.
So, it is no surprise that his latest piece of directing has got me almost giddy with Awe. AND, it's only a PSA.....about Meth.

Powerfully frightening.

Curious about Darren? Check out his resume here.

2 movie Review

My husband and I finally made it back to the theater for a movie. We usually see at least 1 movie a week, but life got busy and we hadn't been to the theater in a month :(
We made it back, but we were not pleased. Our mistake was seeing
In Time. We were both intrigued by the concept of the film so it seemed like a no brainer. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, here it is.....
Everyone is genetically engineered to stop aging at 25. From the moment they turn 25 they start living on time, literally. They get paid in time, they purchase things with time, etc. The "time" is shown in pretty green neon on the forearm of each person.

That's the concept. Pretty cool, right? Well, everything got lost in translation cause this movie was a freaking, unimaginative BORE!!!
I would not recommend this movie. It might be worth a viewing if it accidentally appeared in your DVD player and you didn't in any way actually pay any money. That way, the movie will only be sucking your time and not your pocketbook. (I had to have at least 1 time suckage pun!)  Final: 2 thumbs down.

Second movie of the week was Melancholia.  I have been uber excited about this trailer for months. I am happy I got to see the film, but I don't know how I feel about the film. It's definitely an art house movie with it's 5 minute opening of extreme slow motion shots. Granted, these shots are beautiful. The cinematography is breath taking. But, the story? Slow. Muffled. Sad. Oddly intriguing. Is it worthy of Oscar buzz? Perhaps. I wouldn't be surprised. But, I'm sure I'll have a lot to say on Oscar buzz once I've seen more contenders.
And that's that. I can't seem to force myself to say anything more about the movie. Oh, wait....I LOVED the score. Haunting pieces of music.

Sometimes I'm blind

Sometimes my mind goes blank and I just don't pay attention.
example:
Florence + The Machine has a new album!!!!!!!

I reckon in the back of my mind I knew, cause I've been digging on their single Shake it Out. Check out the video below.

The new album, Ceremonials, is downloading in my iTunes as I type this. I hope it rocks my world like their last album.
It's been such a great fall music time for me.
Now, Fiona Apple......... (fist raised in air)

Trailer for viewing

I've been fascinated by this trailer for months now. This movie seems oddly wonderful and intriguing. I do hope I get to see it in theaters.  Could it be an Oscar possibility?  Not sure, but Kirsten Dunst did win best actress at Cannes. We'll see....
In the mean time. Watch this trailer.

If not, watch the one below.

TV update/roundup :)

Homeland has been picked up for a 2nd season!  If you are not watching this show, you really are missing out. Damn good TV.

Dexter is just going the distance this season with the religious theme. Each episode gets better and better. So far, a solid season. I look forward to answers and even more revelations!

Revenge is still creeping up as the most entertaining NEW show of the 2011 season. I don't even care if there is a 2nd season, as long as this season continues to deliver the punch that keeps me tuning in.

Pretty Little Liars delivered a wonderful Halloween episode. (Yes, people, I watch Pretty Little Liars, and I love it!) If you are a fan, I do hope you caught the complete flashback episode centered around Allison. It was good stuff!

American Horror Story. What can I say? I can't stop watching. But, I generally have to watch it during the day cause it freaks me out! I never really thought a TV series would scare me, but this one does. In addition to the fright factor, there's such a perverse under tone that is very reminiscent of Nip/Tuck. I'm officially hooked on this show.

America's Next Top Model: All Stars. I have never ever missed an episode of ANTM and I never will. I love fashion photography and this show always gives a bit of inspiration. This season is filled with All Stars (former contestants), in other words, they brought all the crazy back and put them in a house and said 'Compete!' Genius Tyra Banks. Genius.

What shows are rocking your world this fall? I'd love to hear what you think!!!
I'm always open to new shows, I just need an introduction.
Why not?

Not in Texas, but in SoCal.... :)

Riding with my sister today through and about Long Beach we pulled up behind this truck.

For a moment I forgot I was in California. I thought for a fleeting moment I was back in Texas. Either way, gotta love Freedom of Speech.  Also, that star looks like the Cowboys star, yes?

Discoveries 101

This week I'm visiting my sister, her hubby, and their precious daughter (my niece) Kaylen in sunny SoCal. (Really not so sunny right now.) I've been here around 24 hours and I've discovered the reason Drive Thrus were invented........are you ready......wait for it.....
Babies.
If you're a current mother of a baby, then you get what I'm saying, if not, let me explain.
Babies come with a lot of baggage; car seats, diaper bags, inability to walk or talk, curiosity, and depending on the age, weight.
So an easy jaunt to Starbucks for coffee becomes an almost downright production.
There's two option:
1. Take child and stroller and go into Starbucks for your coffee.  Sounds easy. It's not. It's really NOT.
2. Take child in arms and walk right in. Problem there is paying, holding coffee and holding a child. Kind of a juggling problem. And God forbid you spill coffee!!!
This is where Drive Thrus are the most brilliant invention for parents, or in my case, Aunts/babysitters.
Strap that kid in the car seat. Push play on the baby DVD player and drive on thru.
Today I had Starbucks AND In & Out, all with an infant.
Without Drive Thrus I would have had none of it. So bless you drive thru makers. Bless you.

On the eve....

Tomorrow marks the release of two new albums:
Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto  and Kelly Clarkson's Stronger.

I've been a huge Kelly fan since her first note during auditions for American Idol. I've seen her live, first row, with my sweet, perfect mom. She has an amazing voice. Soulful, powerful, endearing. I've anxiously been awaiting this album. Now, the clever girl that I am, has managed to listen to the full album already. I wish I could muster more excitement, but alas, I can not. The album isn't bad, but it's so pop that it disappoints me. Granted, there are a few songs that stick out like Honestly,  and Dark Side,  two ballad-like songs that have some meat to them. They get under your skin a bit. But, its only a little bit. Still nothing holds a candle to her song Sober,  from her underrated album My December.  I miss that Kelly. Stronger feels overproduced with a need for commercial success.  If you're a Kelly fan, I think you'll be mildly pleased. I give the album ***1/2, mostly cause I never want Kelly to stop making music.
It would be appropriate to post a new song by Kelly, but I feel the need to post the song Sober. This is an epic song. Listen all the way through cause it just gets better and better :) Also, this performance is new, performed just a few days ago in LA.
And I guess I'll post a new song too, from the same concert.:)
Here's Dark Side.

Okay, onto Coldplay. I've slowly grown into a small liking of Coldplay. I can't explain why in the past I didn't like, I just didn't. Sometimes we get a block in our head and it takes some time to knock it down. Well, my block must have been knocked down cause I'm actually excited for Mylo Xyloto. I haven't heard the full album yet, but I'm mighty pleased with their first releases, especially Paradise. I love this song and I love the video. Great, happy, perfect video.
I'll give my review of Coldplay's new album soon. Until then, buy it yourself :)

Impatient American.....Homeless video now available.

If you haven't read the post before this one, stop reading and scroll down.

Got it? Well, approximately 37 seconds after I posted that, I found Maria's video. Just hanging out on youtube. Waiting.
I swear to you all, 3 days ago, it wouldn't play!
Here it is.
I'm also disappointed in this video. Obviously she needs to hire Bledska Works (that's me and Rob) and we'll make her a better, story driven video. This one's pretty, but come on!!!
It's my disappointment for the day and it's only 10 am. :(
Thoughts?
